A Mountain of Canon Gear By TroyB These night shots have an interesting story behind them them. I had finished doing a modeling shoot, and was contemplating how I might entertain myself for the evening in the middle of tropical nowhere (literally – no TV, radio, car, nada). I had absolutely nothing to do, all evening to do it, and a mountain of Canon equipment at my disposal, including a full set of wireless infrared gear, light stands, and umbrellas. I decided that a mind is a terrible thing to waste, and since the local fauna had converged on my cabaña, as it was the most convenient (and only) source of light for hundreds of yards in every direction, that I should do some experiments in macro photography. The beautiful white moth must have covertly observed the day’s modeling sessions and decided that she did not want to be outdone by her human counterparts, since she patiently held her position on a large glass window for several hours while I tried all manner of experiments using the twin 550EXs with bounce umbrellas from every imaginable position. When I had first noticed her, she had these cool feathery antenna sticking out. Of course as soon as I had everything set up, and ready to shoot, the antenna were retracted. Not to be dissuaded, I shot away for a while. Since the antenna were not forthcoming, I decided to go play with a large beetle that was wandering aimlessly around the huge 70's style paper globe lamp. I kept checking on the status of Ms. White's antenna, and when they popped back out again some 45 minutes later, I was ready! Below are my favorite shots from my "macro modeling session".

| All shots in this grouping were taken in January 2003 on an EOS D60 with Canon 28-70mm f2.8L lens with a Hoya +4 diopter close-up filter installed. The camera was set to ISO 200, M mode, 1/200, f14 and zoom varied between 55mm - 70mm. The D60 had the ST-E2 attached, and two 550EX flash units firing into bounce umbrellas were used from various angles to light the scene. |
